Among the organizations that received millions of “marketing” dollars from the company who invented aspartame were the various diabetic associations and the American Dietetic Association (ADA) who councils many diabetics. I was for over twenty years a registered dietitian and professional member of the ADA.
The G.D. Searle company purchased full page adds in the journals of these organizations, sponsored gala events at their conventions and appear to have been given considerable status at administrative levels of their governing boards. The Dietetic association had a toll free “aspartame hotline” installed at their Chicago main office that dieticians could call to be assured that aspartame was safe. What this did contribute to is the fact that diabetics, as a group, consume considerably more aspartame per capita than the average American.
